Durga Puja happens to be the biggest festival for the Bengalis. Dhunor gondho , Dhaker shobdo ,The awesome ‘bhog’, the intriguing ambiance and last but not the least, glammed up ladies are some obvious reasons for visiting a puja pandal. Here’s a list of the 9 types of people you are sure to encounter at every puja pandal.
1. Organiser dadas running around –
“Arre dada apnar chanda ta baki achhe je” . These are the people who actually make the theme-cultured Durga Puja happen these days. From arranging speakers and distributing bhogs, they are present everywhere, without them the puja seems incomplete.
2 . Gol Table adda in Puja Pandels –
Durga Puja is unimaginable without these vibrant chhele meyer dol sitting around in a circle. Laughing, enjoying and observing what’s happening around is their favourite pastime. “Kichhu korar nei, chol adda mari pandal e boshe”
3. Meeting long lost friends –
Saw your school friend after 10 long years, I am sure this has happened to a lot of people. Well, sometimes you might see your old girlfriends or boyfriends walking around with someone else 🙁
4. Glam aunties –
Newly weds to above 40’s aunties, everyone try to make their mark and get attention in a Puja Pandal, probably with some gold bangles!
5. Rock – e bosha chheler dol –
Roadside romeos, passing comments to shajuguju kora girls is like a tradition during the Pujas.
6. The Bhojonroshiks –
Kolkata becomes a Foodie’s paradise during Durga Puja. From street foods like fuchka to Biriyani in Arsalan, “Thakur dekhte jabo r khabo na, amon hoy naki?”
7. Hippies wearing traditional dresses –
The only time of the year when everyone believes in dressing up all traditional gives them an edge over others. People take special care to dress up in ethnic wear, while you will probably see them in torn jeans and rugged tees throughout the year.
8. Shari pora mamuni –
That class VIII girl from your neighbourhood just started to look like a woman, all wrapped in Saree and looking dainty and elegant.
9. The devotees –
In every para there will be some or a bunch of people who will be attending each and every anjali sessions. Thakurpranam and pujo will be the only things they will be doing all 4 days.
10. The one’s who never saw a Durga Puja –
People from neighbouring countries, states and towns come to Kolkata during Durga Puja to celebrate bangali’s biggest festival. Apparently these are the people who are most enthusiastic about pandal hopping.
