‘With 98 rods and 148 screws she is a National level athlete’
– Inspiring story of Baishakhi Deb, first lady para badminton player from Eastern India
Sometimes we cry on our misfortunes instead of working hard to achieve what we want in life, we wish to have a great job, a big house, a chauffeur driven car and so many other facilities of life so that our life becomes a little simpler. Some people are not even blessed with all the proper working body parts, still they strive to reclaim their lost glory overcoming all personal limitations.
Baishakhi Deb was a 30 yrs old employee from the I.T sector. Her story is a heart-rending one – on 27.8.2006 while she was on the way to office in a cab in Kolkata, she along with two of her colleagues met with a gruesome accident due to the rash driving of the driver. Her two colleagues died on the spot, and Baishakhi was severely injured with a completely fractured spinal chord. The doctors have placed 98 rods and 148 screws and she was declared para-pelagic. Right from childhood Baishakhi was into badminton and even after her accident she continued to play.
She is now the first para-badminton lady player from the entire eastern India. Baishakhi represented India at the international Para badminton tournament in Indonesia and also at the world para-badminton championship in England.
