These Simple Yet Stories Instilled Street Photographs Of Kolkata Will Amaze You
Soumyendra Saha is a street photographer from Kolkata and an erstwhile software engineer .After an erratic 12-year career crunching C code for companies making network equipment, he was toying with the idea of freelancing and finally left his job in early 2014. Following that move, with lots of time to spare, he decided to roam the streets of Kolkata to discover the city instead of the mountains, an alternative he tried on a couple of occasions before ,and started taking photos, again…
These photos are a result of practicing contemporary street photography in Kolkata and have an element of humour/ surprise /intrigue or they are just a complex unique moment. Also most have been taken keeping a definite structure,a geometry as its foundation. He has tried to make some sense out of the utter chaos that exists in Kolkata streets and infuse some story, some meaning into it.
These are all standalone shots and no sequence or connection to another is to be found. Lastly, Kolkata’s heritage , tradition, culture, people plays no central theme in these photos. They are mostly to make you think and/or smile, not feel 🙂
Tips from Soumyendra Saha to the newcomers in the profession:
Keep your mind free and look at the world through the eyes of the child in you. Good photographs will follow. To that end a relevant thing that I would like to bring up here is – complexity. Complexity tends to creep into taking photos and photos itself. So learn to keep things deliberately simple. Because if you are trying to show something of beauty, in form, color, or story, it has to be simple first. Quoting an ending line from a poetry by Tagore, “Ihai bujhilam, jahai sohoj, tahai sundor” (This I understood, that what is simple, is beautiful).
